History - Check back for updates - Give us your update

  • The history of the New Hill area reflects its location near major creeks, trading paths, US1 (old & new) and today, I-540.
  • The Olive family were among the first to populate and farm this area. Henderson Olive and Martha Ragan Olive, first owners of the house , earlier lived close by in a classic Carolina cottage that they then moved and used as the detached kitchen of their new c.1855 home. Sold to Pascal Upchurch in 1897, various members of the Upchurch family lived in the 1855 home until it became a tenant farm home, later owned by B. C. Poole and family.
  • The current owners, Tyre and Cheryl Lanier purchased the property in 1978, renovating it in 1981 and expanding it in the 1990s. Updates in 2020 included new siding & windows, enclosed sun porch and geothermal HVAC.
  • The unrenovated old detached kitchen (the Olives' first home, now used for storage) is a potential renovation project. It is similar in design and construction to a cottage (the Joseph Lane House, c.1775) featured in the book Carolina Cottage: A Personal History of the Piazza House by Margaret Ruth Little. Joseph was the brother of Joel Lane, the founder of Raleigh.
  • Ask about local stories that include the nearby unrenovated New Ruin Tavern  (late 1700s through much of the 1800s), the Olive Chapel Baptist Church (founded in 1850) and Troy’s Cabin Camp (a motor court on Old US1, earlier 20thCentury).
  • When Jordan Lake was created, a north/south railway was relocated to just east of the lake. It was later decommissioned except for a small nearby section that is now a hobby railroad called New Hope Railway.
  • Another section became the American Tobacco Trail (hiking and biking) that starts about  a mile  from Grand Oak and runs north to Durham.
  • Additional historic info, links and contacts available.
